Box Score Coming off a tough loss that saw some fireworks Friday night, the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team was hoping for a better result Saturday.
For the second straight game, the Lakers hosted the Concordia Stingers, a team that sits in third place in the East Division with a 13-6-0 record, at Memorial Gardens.
The Lakers turned in one of their best performances of the season, gutting out a 4-2 victory over the Stingers.
Nipissing came out with a lot of jump, outshooting the Stingers 6-0 early on.
With Nipissing leading in the shot department,
Harrison Caines put the Lakers ahead where it matters.
He made no mistake on a breakaway, going five-hole, to put the Lakers up 1-0 with just under nine minutes to go in the first period.
The goal was the only one of the first period, as the Lakers took a lead into the intermission.
Shots were 18-11 in favour of the Stingers.
Nipissing struck for two more in the second period to go up by three.
First,
Pascal Valcourt buried his seventh of the season, with Caines earning the lone assist, as both players make it multi-point games.
Then on the power play,
Jacob Collins found the back of the net to make it 3-0.
Valcourt added his third point of the game with an assist and
Devyn Mayea picked up the other helper.
Despite being outshot 33-26 through 40 minutes, the Lakers continued to lead, up 3-0.
It took almost 17 minutes for the next goal and unfortunately for the Lakers it spoiled goalie
Zach Roy's great effort.
The Stingers, with the goalie pulled, found the back of the net with 3:23 left in the third.
Less than two minutes later, the Lakers iced it, scoring into the empty net.
Jonathan Rees battled for a loose puck and made no mistake hitting the back of the net.
Roy was strong in net for the Lakers and finished with 50 saves, while Nipissing had 31 shots of their own on the Concordia net.
Next up, the Lakers hit the road and take on the Ottawa Gee Gees Friday night and the Queen's Gaels Saturday.
