Box Score Coming off a dominant win and near-perfect effort, the Nipissing Lakers men's was back in action Saturday night.
The Lakers hosted the powerful Concordia Stingers who enter the game with a 5-0-0 record and ranked number two in Canada.
An absolute great effort, backed by terrific goaltending saw the Lakers hand the Stingers their first loss of the season, holding on for a 2-1 win to cap off a perfect weekend on home ice.
In the opening period, the teams traded chances and combined for 27 shots, with Nipissing holding the 14-13 edge, but neither team was able to find the back of the net and went to the intermission all even at 0-0.
In the middle frame, it was much of the same – great pace, big hits and chances, but nothing in the way of offence.
Finally, after an unsuccessful 3-on-1 by the Lakers, the Stingers caught a break and found the back of the net to go up 1-0 with 8:47 to go in the period.
About three minutes later, Nipissing was rewarded for their hardwork.
A great shift, tenacious forecheck and pretty setup saw
David Campbell score his first career OUA goal to tie things up.
Kyle Foreman made the feed in front to Campbell who made no mistake.
The third member of the line,
Charlie Johnson, also earned an assist on the goal.
After 40 minutes, the Lakers and Stingers were all tied up, 1-1.
Shots favoured Nipissing 26-25 after two exciting, well-played periods of hockey at Memorial Gardens.
In the third, it didn't take long for the Lakers to take the lead thanks to a power play and a bit of a fortunate bounce.
Tyson Tomasini – with his first OUA goal – banked a shot off the Stingers goalie and into the net to put Nipissing up 2-1.
Harrison Caines grabbed the lone helper on the go-ahead goal.
That third period tally was enough, as Roy was outstanding in the final period, turning aside 17 shots to hold on to the win for Nipissing.
In total, he made 41 saves, while the Lakers had 29 shots of their own.
The Lakers hit the road for their next two games, taking on the Waterloo Warriors Friday night and the Laurier Golden Hawks Saturday.
Game time for both contests are schedule for 7pm.
