MEN'S HOCKEY: LAKERS PUT IN COMPLETE EFFORT AS THEY TOP GUELPH

Box Score Coming off a strong weekend on the road where they earned a pair of victories, the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey returned home for their final game of the first half of the season on home ice.

The Lakers hosted the Guelph Gryphons Wednesday night, having defeated the Gryphons 2-1 way back in September to begin the season, in their first meeting.

It was another complete effort, as the Lakers skated away with a 4-1 win, grabbing their eighth win of the season.

After a decent pace to start the period, but nothing in the way of goals and only a handful of chances, the Lakers struck first.

After strong puck movement and a quick pass along the blueline, a Devyn Mayea shot was redirected by Kyle Foreman to put Nipissing up 1-0.

The goal came with 2:04 left in the period, as Payton Vescio earned the other assist on the game's opening tally.

After the first, the Lakers led 1-0 and held an 18-9 advantage in the shot department.

It took almost half the game, but the Gryphons did manage to tie things up.

A power play marker with 11:36 left in the second made it 1-1.

Late in the period, the Lakers retook the lead thanks to a pretty passing play.

Charlie Johnson tapped in a tic-tac-toe after two slick passes from Charler Farmer and Kyle Foreman.

The late marker put Nipissing up a goal heading into the third, as they continued to outshoot Guelph – 23-18 after two periods of play.

Up a goal after two, the Lakers extended their lead midway through the period.

Johnson tapped home a nice feed from Vescio, as the two combined on another goal to give Nipissing a cushion.

Near the midway point of the period, Cole Stewart buried his fourth of the season, extending the Lakers lead to 4-1.

Harrison Caines and Chase Lacombe grabbed the helpers on Stewart's goal.

A balanced attack secured the win for the Lakers, who grab their fourth win at home.

Newcomer Reece Proulx was between the pipes for the Lakers, turning aside 18 shots, while Nipissing had 31 of their own on the Gryphons net.

The Lakers close out the first half of the season on the road Saturday night, taking on the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks in Oshawa.

Puck drop is set for 7pm.
