Box Score North Bay, ON – Nipissing Women's Basketball played hard but ultimately came up just short, losing 77-68 to the Guelph Gryphons at home on Friday, Jan. 30.
Nipissing outscored Guelph 18-17 in the first quarter. Nipissing led 11-8 before Guelph took a 15-14 lead. The score remained close for the remainder of the quarter.
In the second, the Lakers outscored Guelph 18-13, building their lead. The Lakers led 30-17 before Guelph scored six points late in the half to cut Nipissing's lead to six, 36-30.
In the third, Guelph outscored Nipissing 21-12. The Gryphons tied the game at 43 before scoring quickly to lead 51-45. Sophie Milner would score a three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining in the half to cut Guelph's lead to three, 51-48.
In the fourth, the Lakers looked to get back into the game and did so, tying the game at 56 before Guelph took a three-point lead once again. The Gryphons scored a big three-point shot that proved to be a pivotal moment in the game, taking a six-point lead with 5:40 left. Nipissing chipped away at the deficit they faced but Guelph maintained and added to their lead, eventually taking the game 77-68.
Nicole Budd led the Lakers with 20 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists, and 1 steal. Sophie Milner scored a double-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals, a 1 block. Taryn Gauthier scored 14 and added 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Katelyn DeCook scored 7 points and added 8 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 assist.
The loss moves Women's Basketball to 5-13.
