WOMEN’S HOCKEY: LAKERS FALL TO X-WOMEN TO CLOSE OUT NATIONALS

After suffering a tough loss Friday night in the quarter-finals, the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team was back in action Saturday afternoon. 

The Lakers took on the St. FX X-Women in the consolation semi-final, as the X-Women dropped their first round game as well. 

A fast started wasn't enough for the Lakers as they fell 7-3 to St. FX, ending their bid for a national title. 

In the opening period, the teams didn't waste anytime hitting the scoreboard. 

Just 49 seconds into the game, the Lakers took a 1-0 lead. 

Madison Laberge banged home the game's opening tally. 

Laberge's first of the tournament came unassisted.  

St. FX didn't waste any time replying, scoring less than three minutes into the game. 

They added to their lead with four minutes left in the period and tacked on a third goal with just over a minute to go. 

Thanks to their three straight goals, St. FX took a 3-1 lead into the intermission. 

They also led 15-4 in the shot department. 

In the middle frame, the X-Women added to their lead less than three minutes into the period, potting their fourth straight goal. 

The X-Women goal was the only one of the period for either team despite chances at both ends. 

Shots favoured St. FX 31-9 after two periods of play. 

There wasn't much to report in the way of offence in the first half of the third despite the Lakers pushing to close the gap. 

They finally did breakthrough just last the midway mark of the period and the offence opened up. 

Katie Chomiak rifled a shot into the top of the net to get the Lakers within two with just over eight minutes left in the period. 

Kara Den Hoed and Maggie McKee helped set up Chomiak's first of the tournament. 

Unfortunately, St. FX replied quickly, scoring to regain their three goal lead just a minute late. 

Nipissing would once again climb within two, scoring shortly after the X-Women goal. 

Chomiak buried her second of the game to pull Nipissing within two. 

Her second goal came unassisted at 13:01. 

St. FX would once again answer, scoring into the empty-net despite the puck not looking like it made it into the goal. 

With Nipissing pushing late, the X-Women again score into the empty net to go ahead 7-3 with 43 seconds left. 

Chloe Marshall got the nod in net for the Lakers and finished with 32 saves, while Nipissing fired 15 of their own at the St. FX net. 

The loss of ends another terrific season by the Lakers, as they earn their second straight OUA medal, as well as their second straight trip to the USports National Championship.
