WOMEN'S HOCKEY: Lakers take home impressive win over Lions

Hennessy, Svienson combine for five goals in WHKY victory

North Bay, ON – Nipissing Women's Hockey picked up a huge 9-2 win over the York Lions on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at Boart Longyear Memorial Gardens. 

The Lakers opened the scoring early in the first period as Abby Lunney fired her 12th goal of the season to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. Lunney's goal was unassisted. At 5:58 of the first, York got on the board and tied the game at one. Nipissing's Jill Hennessy gave the Lakers the lead again at 9:29, scoring her 10th goal of the season.  

Nipissing and York would each have power play chances to no avail. Then, Jill Hennessy scored her second goal of the period and 11th of the year at 17:49 to give the Lakers a 3-1 lead. York took a body checking penalty at 18:09, and Nipissing scored their fourth goal of the period at 18:28 as Melissa Svienson scored her 5th goal of the season to give the Lakers a 4-1 lead.  

The scoring wouldn't stop there, as less than 30 seconds later Jill Hennessy would complete her first period hattrick at 18:52, making it 5-1 Lakers. 16 seconds after that, Peyton Gabruck scored Nipissing's sixth of the period, her second of the year to make it 6-1. A five-goal Lakers lead is where things would stand after 20 minutes of play. Shots in the first were 11-7 for Nipissing. 

York scored their second of the game at 16:05 of the second period, but Nipissing would again respond less than a minute later to restore a five-goal lead as Ella Allen scored her first goal of the season at 16:59. Nipissing's Liberty Aime also scored her first goal soon after, giving the Lakers a six-goal lead at 17:19. Nipissing led York 8-2 after 40 minutes of play. Shots on goal in the second period were 11-5 for York. 

The third period saw only one goal scored as Melissa Svienson netted her second tally of the contest and sixth of the year at 4:59 of the frame. The Lakers skated to an impressive 9-2 win.  

Lakers goalie Jordan Sladics stopped 24 of 26 York shots in her 3rd win of the season. 

Nipissing scored three power play goals on five chances in the game. 

The win moves Lakers Women's Hockey to 4th place in the OUA East with 29 points and a 9-8-4-1 record.  
WHKY is back in action Friday, Feb. 6 at 7PM as Laurier Golden Hawks pay a visit to Boart Longyear Memorial Gardens. Tickets are $15 for general admission at the Memorial Gardens Box Office and are free for students.
