Brampton, ON — On a blistery, snow-covered field at Terry Fox Stadium, the Nipissing Lakers capped off a historic season with their first-ever appearance in the Baggataway Cup Final, the national championship for men's university field lacrosse. Despite challenging conditions and a strong Guelph Gryphons squad, the Lakers left it all out on the field before falling 15–5.
The game began under swirling snow and biting wind, making footing and ball control difficult for both teams. Nipissing battled through the elements and never quit, showing the resilience and determination that defined their season. After trailing early, the Lakers continued to push, scoring in each half and refusing to back down against a strong Gryphons side.
Offensively,
Jason Knox led the way with 2 goals and 1 assist (3 points), while
Carter Tait added 2 goals,
Zach Tarr chipped in a goal and an assist, and
Jack Quinn contributed one assist. In net,
Connor O'Toole, named Player of the Game, was outstanding once again, making numerous saves under relentless pressure and keeping the team competitive throughout.
While the scoreboard didn't reflect the effort, this weekend marked a turning point for Lakers lacrosse. The team earned its first-ever semifinal win, advanced to the national championship game, and proved they belong among the elite. With only two graduating student-athletes, the Lakers return a deep, hungry roster ready to build on this success in 2026.
"This was a historic moment for Lakers lacrosse, and we're just getting started," says
Sarah Batley, Director of Athletics. "Thank you to our fans for showing up in full force—you were part of every big play. With so many players returning, we're hungry for next year."
We are incredibly proud of this team — for their grit, their heart, and for making history. The future is bright for Lakers lacrosse.
